Friendship
The Social tab in your menu shows your current relationship with each villager.
Heart Meter
Each person shows a row of 10 achievable hearts indicating the strength of your relationship with them. If you're married, your spouse's row will show 12 achievable hearts instead, though it is actually possible to reach 13 hearts with your spouse.
The hearts will fill up or decrease over time as you talk to people and gift them. Each heart represents 250 friendship points. Speaking to a villager once a day gives 20 points, while ignoring them for a day will depreciate 2 points, so don't ignore your friends! If you reach 10 hearts with a non-marriage candidate or 8 hearts with a bachelor/bachelorette to whom you have not given a bouquet, the row of hearts will no longer decay even if you do not speak to them ever again.
You can give each villager up to 2 gifts (recommended once on a different day) in a week, as indicated by the check-boxes to the right of their entry in the social tab for maximum effect. Birthdays are an exception where you can gift a villager on their birthday regardless of having already gifted them twice in one week. After marriage, your spouse can now be given ONE gift every single day. Each villager has their own individual likes/dislikes. The more they like a gift, the more friendship points you will get, in other words, a quicker filling of the row of hearts; A loved gift is worth 80 points and a liked gift is worth 45. Be careful, as gifting the villagers something they hate can also cause loss of friendship points and eventually loss of heart(s) if the player keeps it up.
Successfully completing a quest will increase the villager friendship points by 150.
Giving a villager a loved gift on their birthday nets you 640 friendship points (8x the value of a loved gift on a normal day) - it pays to keep some prismatic shards or rabbit's feet around for those hard to please types. Even a liked Birthday gift will net you 360 friendship points, so keeping an eye on the calendar helps. The "Secret Santa" event at the Feast of the Winter Star is another opportunity to multiply friendship points. Gifts given there are worth 5x their normal value.
The player can reach 10 hearts (best friend status) with every villager prior to marriage, and giving bouquets to multiple villagers doesn't render any negative repercussions. Therefore, it is possible for players to encounter all or most of the unique events with each villager before being married.
Hitting a villager with a rock from a slingshot will cause a loss of friendship points. No one likes being shot at, after all.
If a villager is within 7 tiles of your character when you rummage through the trash cans, they may become disgusted. When this happens, you will lose 25 friendship points with that villager. The only exception is Linus who doesn't react negatively. However, if you rummage through a villager's in-house garbage can with the villager anywhere in the house, he/she will react negatively.
The following lists the effect of giving each type of gift on friendship points:
Gift Level | Amount | Santa (5x) | Birthday (8x) |
---|---|---|---|
Best | 80 | 400 | 640 |
Good | 45 | 225 | 360 |
Neutral | 20 | 100 | 160 |
Bad | -20 | -100 | -160 |
Worst | -40 | -200 | -320 |
Heart Events
If you are using mods that allow you to increase your affinity towards players, it is possible to view heart events out of order. If you do not want to view heart events out of order, don't increase your affinity for one person by more than 2 hearts without first encountering a heart event.
