Foraging is a type of skill in Stardew Valley. It is the a process of gathering wild food resources (and other specific items). There are a variety of wild crops which grow seasonally. These items can be used as cooking ingredients, villager gifts, and for Community Center bundle completion.
Chopping trees with an axe also counts as foraging, and can increase the player's foraging skill. Chopping down a tree gives 12 foraging experience points (granted all at once for the last chop that causes the tree to fall), and removing hardwood stumps and logs gives 25 exp each.
The quality of foraged goods comes in four levels: regular, silver, gold, and iridium. However, only players who have chosen the 'Botanist' specialization can find iridium quality foraged goods. Higher quality goods command higher prices when the goods are sold, and deliver greater energy and health benefits when they are consumed. If given as a gift to an NPC who likes or loves it, a quality gift also provides a higher number of friendship points.
Most forageables can be found throughout their season. One exception is Salmonberry, which can only be found during Salmonberry Season (Spring 15-18), on bushes around town. Blackberries can be found on the ground during Fall, but during Blackberry Season (Fall 8-11) Blackberries can be found on bushes throughout town.
2-5 new forageables spawn each day in each map (i.e., areas bounded by screen transitions). There is a hard cap of 6 spawns allowed in any area at a time, except the beach/tidal pool (these are considered two separate areas, and the tidal pool can spawn more than six items). Special items like Spring Onions don't count against this limit and are reset every day. All other forageables reset when the player goes to sleep on Saturday night.
Forage crops grown on the farm from Wild Seeds give 3 foraging experience points when harvested. Picking up Truffles on the farm also gives 3 exp each. Picking up Forage items around town gives 7 exp each.
